The Official John Charles Daly Site

The most well-loved and respected moderator of "What's My Line?"

Often called John Charles Daly by his punster-panelist friend, Bennett Cerf, and on at least two ocassions was called by his full name: John Charles Patrick Croghan Daly, lll, John was one of the most beloved and admired moderators of the popular show, "What's My Line?."

John and his brother John Grant were born in Johanasburg, South Africa and did not come over to the states until their Father had passed away. John was born on February 20th, 1914. When John was only 9 years old, he saw the death of his Father. I suppose his Mother Helene was hoping to make a fresh start when she brought both her two sons to the states on a boat, which took six WEEKS.!

Helene was headed for Boston, Ma, where John's uncle Leo was living at the time. The original plan was to have the uncle assist Helene when she got here, however, upon arriving in Ma., Helene boarded both her sons in the prestigious
Tilton School. At the time, John was in the 5th grade. Helene soon realized that she could make an honest living in Ma. by teaching piano lessons.

While Helene had enrolled her two sons at the Tilton School, she found her skills as a pianist came in handy, and she soon had purchased a little house on her own, supporting her two children alone. While she originally had brought her two sons to live with there uncle's guidance, Helene soon found that was able to manage supporting both her children, as well as herself on hew own.
